Fashion on the Football Field – Down to the Basics
Long gone are the days of the simple football kit. One colour football socks, one colour football shorts, one or two colours on a simply designed football shirt. Even the iconic pub team now wears designer fashioned football kits. However those trendy fashion conscious people at the IFAB (International FA Board) believe we are just not trying hard enough!
Changes by the IFAB regarding permitted clothing last year have created an impact that affects all levels of the game. Bath City found last year to their surprise when five of their players were sent off in an FA Youth Cup tie for wearing the wrong colour baselayer(underpants) while playing.
Despite versions of the rule being in place it has now been fully clarified that all football player’s undergarments, such as tights and the increasingly popular performance base layers, must be matching in colour to a team’s kit. This was confirmed by Sepp Blatter, at IFAB’s 125th Annual General Meeting and takes effect from the professional leagues through to Sunday league.
The last Sunday League game I watched, I recon there were probably two or three different colour football socks and an even larger variety of shorts, about 9 team shirts, the rest being t-shirts of the team colours. Can’t see IFAB or FIFA dress dress rules having an immediate impact on those players.
This is a change that will affect teams & players as well as sports retailers; the underlayers, or baselayers as they are known are generally popular in all seasons, predominantly for performance enhancement, and will need to become available in more colour options to suit the ruling. Generally offered in a plain black or navy – and in high tenacity moisture-wicking stretch fabric – they have not often been made with custom considerations. There also needs to be a consideration for baselayer wear for women’s and kids football, perhaps needing lighter more or suitable fitted designs.
