Newcastle United 5-0 Manchester United, October 1996
At a deafening St. James’ Park on Sunday 20th October 1996, something wicked came Alex Ferguson’s way as Newcastle United struck five past Manchester United to mark their seventh-straight league win of the season, and United’s first defeat.
Kevin Keegan’s Toon Army were on fire coming into the game and their hunger and passion really shone through against the red half of Manchester, despite the presence of David Beckham and Eric Cantona in the lineup.
It obviously greatly affected Manchester United as it was the first of four straight defeats including, a week later, an equally-embarrassing 6-3 defeat at Southampton. They eventually reached the top-spot again in February and stayed there until they lifted the Premier League trophy in May.
So sit back and marvel at Philippe Albert’s deft chip over Peter Schmeichel, and David Ginola’s sublime edge-of-the-box goal, which produced commentator Andy Gray’s now-famous, “Take a bow, son” remark.
