Training
Football Training - An alternative way to increase strength, stamina, fitness.
My normal weekly training cycle would be club training night, a couple of runs and two weight sessions at the local gym to increase my upper and lower body strength.
A friend of mine Tom, has been gym training most of his life, six days a week. After many years of training he doesn’t go near a gym anymore and still looks great. He’s fitter, stronger enjoying his training more than ever. What brought about such a change? Kettlebells!
What are Kettlebells I hear you cry!
A 'kettlebell' or girya (Russian) is a traditional Russian cast iron weight that looks like a cannonball with a handle. The ultimate tool for extreme all-round fitness. The kettlebell goes way back, it first appeared in a Russian dictionary in 1704. "Not a single sport develops our muscular strength and bodies as well as kettlebell athletics," reported Russian magazine Hercules in 1913.
What's So Great About Kettlebells?
The reason for the boost in kettlebell training it that it gets back to basic training that requires functional, whole body fitness. Kettlebells require an athlete to focus on whole-body conditioning because lifting and controlling a kettlebell forces the entire body, and specifically the core, to contract as a group, building both strength and stability at the same time. Kettlebell workouts engage multiple muscle groups at once. In this way, they are a great option for getting a whole body workout in a short time.
Tom’s now opened his own fitness centre which has only one conventional weight system, a bench press the rest and dozens of Kettle Bells of all sizes. I’m a convert myself and gave up the gym sessions and feel so much better, although is was tough at first. Check them out but make sure you get proper instruction from someone experienced in training.
